Network updates: we are no longer supporting PPTP and L2TP

starting January 17th, 2020

Cybersecurity has been a big talking point in 2019. Mostly for all the wrong reasons.

Data breaches have risen to an all-time high, hackers are getting more ingenious, and good cyber hygiene is now essential to both people and companies.

Here, at CyberGhost VPN, we always strive to keep our Ghosties safe online.

And we will always put all our efforts into making the internet a more secure place for everyone.

That’s why we’ve decided to stop supporting two VPN protocols: PPTP and L2TP/IPSec.

What are PPTP and L2TP?

Glad you asked. 😉

PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, predominantly supported by Microsoft devices..

Created back in 1999, it had a good life for some time. But it didn’t keep up with ever-developing network infrastructure and increased network capacities.

It’s now an obsolete protocol, with plenty of known vulnerabilities.

L2TP is another blast from the past. It stands for Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol..

And if you want some more acronyms thrown at you, I can tell you that this previously popular VPN protocol combined the best parts from PPTP and L2F.

L2TP is still widely supported on most routers and devices. But it has its vulnerabilities.

Because we need to be responsible here and protect our Ghosties, we will no longer be using these protocols.

What does this mean for you?

If you’re using the latest version of our VPN software, nothing will change for you. Our apps are already configured to adhere to the highest security and privacy standards.

So, what’s next?

Getting rid of these two obsolete protocols was just one of the steps needed for building the VPN of the future.

Our team has been working hard to improve your experience with CyberGhost VPN.

This year, we’ve expanded our server fleet. A lot.

We’re now giving you access to 116 server locations in 91 countries. You’ll never be getting subpar speeds, no matter where in the world you are.

Also, we’ve added even more streaming servers, so you will never miss your favorite shows.

And now, we’re making sure that not even a misconfiguration can jeopardize your anonymity online.

But we also have other goodies in store. We’ll soon be announcing a massive server infrastructure update. New VPN protocols are on their way, too.

So, make sure to keep an eye out for our updates.

Until next time, stay safe and secure!

Bonjour Messieurs,
Merci

Dear Sir,
I don’t understand why when I open your Apps, always you ask me to subscribe again to your software and when I run CYBERGHOST WINDOWS SECURITY SUITE ADDON, it asks me to uninstall Cybert Ghost and I don’t understand.
Thank you.

Also won’t be renewing my subscription when it ends. It was handy to have L2TP support for my router as it doesn’t support anything new.

Nevermind!

We’re sorry to hear that, Robert. We’re committed to offering the best encryption and security standards possible, which is why we offer VPN protocols that are capable of withstanding the latest digital threats. We generally advise against L2TP as it’s no longer secure.

Won’t re subscribe then. Useless for me if these protocols not supported. My routers only support these protocols.

Hi Atif. Sorry to hear about that. We’re doing our part in keeping people safe online, which is why we can no longer rely on obsolete and unsafe protocols. You can however you use CyberGhost VPN on up to 7 devices at the same time with our VPN apps. They use newer protocols which are not only more secure, but also faster.

Merry HoHo to all ghosties out there, and special thanks to the CyberGhost teams around the world doing there best to keep up with modern marvels of technology in keeping preying eyes off our daily lives and biz. I recently bought a new phone and went with a new Network which I called today for help getting into their mobile app and one of there security questions to me was – Which phone # I called the most today on this Christmas day? I responded by asking her if there was a discount today for calling the North Pole today? Well,in any case,I hope all had a good and safe day and rest of holidays, stay safe and wish all of you Ghosties the very best in the new year to come.Happy New Year to All.

Happy New Year to you too, PhantomFrog! 😊

For some reason I can’t find the Mercusys AC12G.
It is possible to find out further changes in the protocols anywhere. Not a desire to buy a router again, but it again turns out that the protocols no longer have support.

Hi, Alex! L2TP and PPTP are still available for manual configuration on a limited number of servers. You can check those in the article above. 🙂

Hello!
How to configure WireGuard for router?
I see everything in drop list protocols by no WireGuard yet.

Hi, Alexander! 👋 At the moment, WireGuard® is only available through our apps. We’re still working on making it available for manual configuration. Stay tuned for future updates!

would be nice if you add a guide on openWrt

Hi! Thanks for your suggestion. We’ll keep your feedback in mind.

Hi, I am not very tech savvy so I have a question. Can I add Cg vpn to my cable company router to keep it protected?

Hi, Jorge! Routers provided by ISPs usually aren’t very VPN-friendly. Firmware like DD-WRT natively supports OpenVPN configurations.

I use L2TP because your GUI app reduces speeds dramatically. For example my ISP in Malaysia (TM) gives me speeds up to 500 Mbps and connecting without VPN to UK I can get up to 400 Mbps. If I use L2TP I can get maybe 100 Mbps but with the App its only about 20 Mbps (to UK). Today L2TP seems to be unavailable. Disappointed. Is there an alternative to the app I can configure in Windows 10 or inside a router?

Reply

Hey there! L2TP is still supported on a few servers. You can check those in the article above. You can also try other protocols in the Windows app. Make sure you add the CyberGhost app as an exception to your antivirus and firewall. We also support OpenVPN router configurations on DD-WRT, TomatoUSB, TomatoUSB Merlin build.

ghostie who goes all manual

Posted on 11/02/2020 at 13:38

I do realise that you can create a new device in the account section, select protocol, country and server group, and download that configuration. Is that really the only way to access (one at a time) configuration information for the servers? So if I want to have e.g. a dozen different configs I have to go through the create dummy device -> select protocol, country, server group -> download configuration -> remove dummy device process a dozen times over? I’m sure we used to be able to just download a zip file of server configs….

Reply

Hey there! We did indeed do our best to optimize the whole process, as far as manual configurations are concerned. We have received feedback from users who had difficulties with managing the zip files for multiple or custom configurations. This is why we aimed to build a more intuitive way of creating credentials. We’ve noted your point of view and will take your feedback into consideration.

You say that you recognize that some of your customers prefer manual configuration. But everything on the current site appears to push customers towards downloading one of your clients – are the server list information and openvpn config files still available? I can’t find them anywhere.

Reply

The good news for you is that we’ll still support these PPTP/L2TP configurations for a while, with access limited to servers located in:

United States of America
United Kingdom
France
Canada
Hong Kong
Germany
Australia
The Netherlands

Are these working after January 17th, 2020? I

Until my new router arrives I am stuck with PPTP

Reply

Hey there! Yes, PPTP and L2TP/IPSec configurations will be available after January 17th, but only on the countries mentioned above.

Me encanta esta aplicación

Hello,I’m agree to abandon these 2 protocols and switch to openvpn but I would need a wifi router which supports this type of protocol and which is not expensive! Any idea ?

How can I connect my tablet to VPN

Reply

Hey there, Ghostie! It only takes a few clicks to enjoy full VPN protection with our app for Android or iOS. You can check out our full guide list for more info.

How do you log out of devices, when I sign on it says I need to log out of devices?

Hi Colin. You can remove old devices from your online account. Check out our guides for more details.

The Routers which supports OPENVPN are expensive, please continue given support to this old protocols because they are compatible with many economic routers.
Thank you

Hey, Ronald. L2TP is still supported on a few servers. You can check those in the article above. 🙂

I just signed up for Spectrum internet and TV. How do I know that my router is not one of those that will not be supported? How do I find that information out?

Reply

Hi, Jennifer! It’s best to check the specs of your router and see if it has OpenVPN compatibility. If your ISP is providing the router, they can surely answer your questions.

Is there a plan to release an app for samsung smart TVs in the future ?

Good day, I must admit that all these moves and counter moves are a bit beyond my scope of tech comprehension. However, I have a positive feeling about the whole process. In mariage, you say “I do” and hope all will go well, despite the inevitable possibility of life tampering with those blissfull initial feelings. Thank you for your support , I now have to install your system on my telephone, wish me luck.Jacques Pelletier
